Low key neighborhood pizza place
Ate here on a quiet Monday night. Local neighborhood place that serves pizza, calzones, and some sandwiches. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable. Had a ham sandwich and it was good but the fries were just ok. Wasn’t crowded on a Monday night but a steady stream of people would come in to pick up to go orders. There is some metered parking across from the restaurant entrance and some additional street parking around the restaurant.

Zella's is a great place for great pizza. The hand made crust is great and the pizza's are thus very good.

Be the first to ReplyOdd but great place.
Right next to Hollins Street Market. Food is good. Pizza is very good. Service depends on who is there but normally it is quick. The menu is diverse with lot's of choices. Nice place to sit and chat with friends.
Be the first to ReplyA surprise across from Hollins St. Market
While visiting the Irish immigrant Museum a few blocks away we asked our docent for lunch suggestions. He emphatically recommended Zella's and we found out why! Zella's is a neighborhood pizzeria serving sandwiches, salads, and pizza with a full bar. It's located in a storefront corner location across from the Hollins Street Market, an historic neighborhood market with a number of stalls featuring fresh seafood, groceries and prepared foods. The market, unfortunately, has seen better days, but that's another review. There is some kind of a vibe going on in this neighborhood. Apparently, lots of young people, some who work at the nearby University of Maryland Hospital, are moving into the area and Zella's looks like a neighborhood magnet. There's lots of original art on the walls, for sale, of course, and a bulletin board in the corner was full of job opportunities, local events and other info. What sets Zella's apart is the great food. We enjoyed a very tasty mushroom melt sandwich and one of the biggest calzones we have ever seen. Both were delicious and certainly not what we would have expected in a storefront casual restaurant in this part of Baltimore. If you are like us and love to experience off-the-beaten path restaurants you find on Trip Advisor, give Zella's a try. Carry out available, too.

This was my first-time eating food from this restaurant which turned out to be delivery order for our team that was working past 8:00pm in the office. Our order was a St. Magnus's Meat classic pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, bacon, ham & Italian sausage) and a create your own chicken pizza with BBQ sauce. The pizza was well done and had a thick crust. Personally I am not a fan of thick crust. Overall, I thought it was average run of the mill fare and not close to a gourmet caliber. I would not go out of my way for their pizza. Note a large pizza is only 14 inches.

We were in town for an event at Johns Hopkins, I was looking for a good pizza place that had public parking. The were at lot of good reviews for Zella's so we gave it a try. We were very happy we chose this place, it's a nice eatery and the owner was nice. We had Zella's special pizza plus a calzone and a pepperoni pie. All were very good and well worth the money. I would recommend this place and would return in the future.

After walking from the Edgar Alan Poe museum to Hollins Market (which is about a quarter mile) we were hungry for pizza. And there on a quiet corner across from Hollins Market was Zella’s Pizzeria. Dough made fresh daily. Fresh ingredients for toppings. The hand tossed was perfect. We had a garden salad with house lemon thyme dressing. A salad and 10” pie was plentiful for two. The calzone was also highly recommended by the police officers having lunch. Great service from the staff. Kind and accommodating.

If you are in the mood for pizza, I personally think that Zella serves the best pizza in town. Besides pizza, they also serve other dishes you may enjoy like calzones, salads, humus etc... The setting is airy and pleasant and it is always easy to park around the market. I highly recommend this place!
Be the first to ReplyKudos to Jim's Zellas in the Hollins market neighbourhood
MLK boulevard divides the residential neighborhood of Hollins (anchored by Hollins Market) to the west and the more recent addition, the U MD medical, Pharmacy schools to the east. The Hollins area is an old established residential area that is trying to get back on its feet, one row home at a time, call if gentrification if that is the best way to describe or call it inner city. .this was my second visit to the Hollins to help my son secure a summer residence for his internship across MLK blvd. It is not exactly a neighbourhood that appeals at the first visit or embraceable even the second time around, A recent visit to Hollins found us eating at Zellas that sits across the Hollins Market, Kudos to Zellas for serving Hollins since the last 10 years or so. The owner is Kurdish (in ethnicity, who grew up in tacoma park), the food could be described as Mediterranean and offer as a variety of pizza, sandwiches etc. At 1 pm on a Sunday the diverse patrons included a corner table occupied by a few white moms with babies, three African-American brothers, a table of six or so Mainland Chinese and the three of us (curry eaters), and our barely-ready-to-shave Nepali server. We were comforted by our trip to Zella's and by our chat with Jim the young owner. Jim gave us a better insight into the neighborhood and its new occupants. Zellas has a trivia night on Tuesday's. The walls exhibited work from local artists for sale. Our light meal was tasty, made with love and labor, home-style, and definitely not mass produced, industrial or fast-foodish. Jim and i chatted about Baltimore being a city with a lot of potential given the many public institutions (U MD medical, John's Hopkins) that bring a positive impact to the local economy. Kudos to each business big or small that helps a neighborhood revive, and attractive for folks to move in a set up shop or home. We hope to come back to Jim and Zella's when hunger calls!
