Had a hankering for Ethiopian food, and couldn't be happier to get my fix at Zeni! Love this place so much, I once had a birthday dinner here lol. During a recent visit, I came on a Friday night at 6pm and there was no wait. Veggie and meat combo is the way to go. It comes with 9 entrees on a large platter, all meant to be eaten with your hands, and is perfect for sharing with 3-4 people. All entrees were well-seasoned and fragrant; my favorites were the kitfo (beef), miser wot (lentils), and kiki alitcha (split peas). My only wish is that there were pictures on the menu so that people could put a name to each entree. The injera (Ethiopian flatbread) is fresh, spongy, and slightly fermented -- the perfect vehicle for scooping up and sopping up the different entrees. **Trigger warning** Injera can be triggering for those with trypophobia (fear of small holes), so just keep that in mind. During our meal, the server walked by multiple times with a sizzling beef plate. It smelled so good, we had to ask for the name of the dish! Zeni is named after the owner of the restaurant, who has an inspiring story that more people need to know about: kqed.org/arts/13905230/z…Ample parking and seating available. In addition to the main dining room, there is a traditional Ethiopian seating area, which is a cozy feature of the restaurant. This is where larger parties are typically seated, or where additional customers are diverted to once the main dining area is filled. FYI: They are short-staffed and service can be slow, so just be patient. The food and experience is worth it! Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic Ethiopian food; truly one of the best places in the Bay Area.
