Adda Indian Canteen Queens Reviews from The Last Year

As a south asian, it takes a special restaurant for me to take the time out to write a review. Do not waste your money here. The red flag for me was that there were no indian or south asians eating. That alone says enough.

Heard this place made it to last year's NY Times top 100 places to eat and that this spot was created by Angel restaurant people, so of course I had to check it out. Brought my Indian friend to help vet authenticity and quality. Here's what we thought: CHILI PANEER - really good, nice texture on the paneer with a beautiful grill on top. Nice heat that wasn't too strong. My friend loved this. PAV BHAJI - my Indian friend said this was (almost) as good as his mom's! That's high praise. I thought it had bold flavor and the bread was nicely buttered and toasted - great texture all around. KALE PAKODA - also got a shining review from my friend, though it was a bit cold when we got it, really bold flavors in the sauce, with a great frittery crunchy fry. GARLIC NAAN - i mean this always hits PANEER CURRY - I got this to share, nice quality to the paneer. Overall, this gets a stamp of approval of authenticity and no frills Indian cooking. I will take this any day over the often overpriced, unnecessarily elevated Manhattan Indian restaurants!
Rating: 3.
5 I've been wanting to come here for a while but unfortunately I thought Adda was just ok. We walked in for dinner on a weekday around 6pm and there were plenty of open tables. The Dahi Batata Puri was really good - refreshing and spicy and packed with flavor. This is definitely worth ordering. The tandoori poussin (chicken) was just ok: the chicken was dry and very bony, and I wasn't a huge fan of the seasoning (chili and vinegar). The lucknow dum biryani was good, but there were too many small pieces and shards of bone mixed in with the goat and rice. I also tried my friend's butter chicken, and it honestly didn't taste like any other butter chicken I've had before - it was very sweet. The garlic naan we ordered also felt a little overbaked. Overall Adda wasn't bad but it doesn't stack up against some other places I've tried. I've generally heard good things about this place, though, so it could be that we didn't order the right dishes.

Didn't really like the food here, maybe I just ordered the wrong things. For appetizers, we ordered the balls, the fried kale, and chili toast. I think the balls and fried kale both tasted quite strange and had too much yogurt for my liking. It also tasted a little acidic (not sure if it was supposed to taste that way). The chili toast was good, but nothing was special about it. The butter chicken was very very tomato-y, and almost tastes like chicken tikka masala. However, it was also jsut okay compared to other places. The lamb biryani was quite spicy but also nothing noteworthy in my opinion.

Come for the goats brains and stay for the biryani! For real though, don't shy away from the goat brains. First off, if no one told you what it was, you might just think it was tofu just based on the texture and presentation. I love sweetbreads, so this was not a stretch for me and my adventurous and trusting friend liked them too! There is a reason it is a hit on the menu. We LOVED our food. The only thing I would pass on was the dahi batata puri. The filling was a bunch of saucy stuff and I wanted more texture and something to sink my teeth into, know what I mean? The Lucknow dum biryani was the shiz and I am mighty miffed I left it in my friend's car and she lives too far away to reclaim it. It was also served in a really unique way covered with a layer of bread, much like a pot pie. Portions were great. When I come to the city, I usually stick to Manhattan out of convenience. This time I went out of my way to go to Queens for this place. It was worth it! I really enjoyed my midget sized margarita. It was tasty and potent enough to put some hair on tour chest. I shall return! Make a reservation if you can.
I came here with high hopes, but sadly Adda was lacking.
It too awhile to get anyone to check on me or answer any questions about the menu. I finally flagged someone down and asked for vegetarian recommendations. Settled on the dahi batata puri and the chili paneer tikka. I was told everything on the menu is spicy, but not too spicy? I'm not sure what that meant since I can only handle mild. Anyway. I took a chance with what I ordered based on reviews I read. Not sure why the dahi batata puri is so popular. You get maybe 5 little pani puris filled with just yogurt and really spicy masala. There were no potatoes in it as the menu describes. Probably wouldn't order that again. Now on to the chili paneer tikka. This was decent because of the crispy outer layer that is seasoned with a spicy blend. When dipped in the chutney, the spice level is more manageable. Keep the bottle of water close! Overall, the vibe is cute and reminiscent of a Bombay canteen. However, the service could have been more attentive and the dahi batata puri could have been better. Perhaps I'd have to try the other menu items to see if they are any better.
I enjoyed a nice dinner with a relative on a Tuesday night.
It's a fairly straightforward walk from the Queens Plaza subway stop - you do have to walk down the busy Queens Blvd - stay clear of that bike lane! The location for Adda is very interesting; I wouldn't call it a hole-in-the-wall but definitely a I-wouldn't-come-here-if-it-weren't-for-this-restaurant-reservation lol. The service spoke minimally to us, aside from "are you ready"? and we proceeded to put in our order. The space is small, and I was nervous that everyone could hear our entire conversation. Although there is the hum of different conversations nearby, it's low enough volume that I can't overhear an entire conversation over my own. My uncle prefers a pescatarian diet, so we ordered the following dishes to share: Baingan Bharta (v) Paneer Do Pyaza (v) Malvani Fish Curry We got two large bowls of rice and some garlic naan as well. The garlic naan was decent; it's thinner than others I've had before, so a bit burnt taste on the edges, and the I didn't taste much butter. Great for dipping in the sauces though! The Baingan Bharta (eggplant) and Malvani Fish Curry were my favorites and I highly recommend them. The eggplant dish also has a small spicy kick, which I enjoyed (I'm low spice tolerance so don't be intimidated!) The Paneer Do Pyaza was very good too, it just had a much thicker sauce compared to the Fish Curry sauce, (which had a curry sauce perfect for dipping naan into or eating with the rice). Overall the meal was delicious. All of us felt stuffed afterwards and we still had leftovers to bring home, so the portions were great. I'd recommend as Adda as a great Indian restaurant in the area.

We ordered the chili cheese toast and keema pao for appetizers. The chili cheese toast was made with amul cheese but didn't have a tasty flavor. The keema pao was had too many spices and took away from the authentic lamb flavor. We ordered the Tandoori Macchi grilled fish and it was delicious!! I feel that there are other better Indian restaurants in the city.

Ambiance (5/5): the restaurant is cozy and fits about 30 with a combo of low seats and bar seating. I loved the plastered posters on the walls and background pop Indian music. Service (5/5): We came via a walk-in during a torrential downpour and there were only 2 patrons during the whole dinner. We didn't want to pay the no-show $50 fee. Since there was no one else there, we were serviced often and quickly! Food (2/5): Cauliflower (4/5) $16: The breading was crunchy and I enjoyed the Szechuan flavoring that gave it a kick. It felt like a small portion for the price point. Junglee Maas (Goat Curry) (2/5): The chunks of meat were large and dry. While the flavor was good, there was too much heat for your average person! It was even a bit too spicy for me I thought I had a good tolerance! There wasn't much liquid to the curry that you could douse your rice in. It comes with a small bowl of a yogurt-forward dish. Garlic Naan (4/5) $5: The naan is on the thinner side compared to other naans I've had which gave it a lovely crunch with each bite. The whole naan was covered in seasoning. Chicken Biryani (3/5) $31: The presentation is awesome; it comes topped with naan baked around the bowl. The server cuts through it and opens the top to expose the dish! The dish is incredibly hot (temperature wise) don't burn your mouth like I did from the excitement! The biryani was extremelyyy spicy. I couldn't personally enjoy the rest of the meal. Overall, I was disappointed with the taste of our dishes. The price point is too expensive for what we got. I won't be coming back again. Note there's plenty of paid meter parking below the bridge.
10/10 recommend Adda Indian Canteen for some good quality
10/10 recommend Adda Indian Canteen for some good quality Indian food! This has become one of my favorite spots in NYC. Don't let the fact that this is in LIC deter you from going. We came here for a dinner reservation on a Sunday night ~7pm. The restaurant was not super crowded, but definitely seemed to be at / near capacity. I would recommend making a reservation beforehand, but don't fret with trying to get a reservation super far in advance. The restaurant itself is very well decorated for the theme it's presenting. "Canteen" refers to cafeteria or a chiller / lowkey food joint people can gather to eat food in South Asia. I love how when you walk into this restaurant it immediately feels like a chiller restaurant vibe. To start off our meal, we ordered the Keema Pao and Dahi Batata Puri. All I have to say is WOW! The Dahi Batata Puri came with fully filled pani puris. The flavors were unreal: a perfect balance of yogurt and spices. The Keema Pao was incredible: absolute spice heaven. Be warned: the Kemma Pao was very spicy (coming from someone with a pretty high spice tolerance). We then ordered the Lucknow Dum Biryani and Dilliwali Butter Chicken. These were also just as amazing to no surprise! I was very fond of the platter the biryani came out in. I had never seen anything like it really. The combination of these two dishes was absolutely delicious. Be warned: the biryani is pretty spicy. We were pretty full by the end of this meal and had leftovers, but I would highly recommend ordering all of these dishes! They were incredibly tasty and flavorful. This is a great casual date spot but also a good opportunity to catch up with friends over a delicious meal. If you are visiting or live in NYC, add Adda Indian Canteen to your list of must trys.
The ambiance was nice and the service was good.
We had the Goat Biriyani and the Dilliwala Butter Chicken with the Cauliflower and Keema Pao (lamb) appetizers, as well as Garlic Nan and Raita. The food was flavorful and good. Portions are generous.
Adda is decently out of the way for most people, but
Adda is decently out of the way for most people, but definitely worth the trek. Came here on a weekday to meet up with some friends who live nearby. It's easy to get to via subway, but other than that the location leaves a lot to be desired. Likely because of that, when we arrived at 6:30 pm we were able to be seated without a reservation. There was only one other table occupied at the time, although a bunch more parties showed up around 7 pm. Food-wise, everything was a standout. We tried: - Dahi Batata Puri -- I love pani puri and this was so good! It was the perfect mix of spicy and refreshing, with the yogurt helping mellow the flavor. Would definitely order again and highly recommend. - Bheja Fry -- so tasty! The spices were delicious and the pao was very nicely buttered and crisp. - Tandoori Macchi -- good flavors and something a little bit on the healthier side. I would say if I skipped one dish, this would likely be it because even though it was well executed, it wasn't mind-blowing. The fish is not that large as well. - Lucknow Dum Biryani -- solid biryani! I've had a ton of biryani and while this wasn't the best I ever had, it was a very solid rendition and I would be happy to order it again. For drinks, we got a couple of the beers which were fine and went with the food. It's a small restaurant with a couple of staff, who were all friendly. You can rest assured if this restaurant was in a different location, it would constantly be packed.
A great Indian place in long island.
They have small menu but very appealing. We had dahi chaat, gobhi manchurian, kale pakoda, butter chicken and paneer dish. Everything was great. Chaats are spicy and flavorful. Dahi papdi is must try. Butter chicken was very tasty as well. Gravy was amazing, so much so that our vegetarian friends were drooling over it. Naans are little smaller in size so place your order accordingly. Want to add that host/staff was amazing as well, we were there on 31st dec and they served us complimentary sweets and starters. A must try.

Service is most important to me because I really value my money's worth. Sometimes the food is good enough to overlook sucky service but food has to be pretty awesome. At Adda FOOD AND SERVICE are top notch. Love the chicken tikka which is always a repeat order for us. The paneer and the crispy cauliflower! They KNOW GOOD FOOD!

Waiter withheld info about the menu from us -- learned a bunch of stuff that would have changed our order when he told the table next to us! More importantly the fish was soggy and mealy and made me physically ill.
How bad is Indian food in NY that this place gets a 4
THE GOOD Wine “uncorkage” was a reasonable $20. For that the bottle was uncorked and we got 4 glasses on the table. Did they not pour the wine you ask? Well well well. And yet this was the best part of the experience. THE BAD Overly salty food, atmosphere, service, and just about everything else. Tandoori : 1. Tandoori fish. : It is sad that an animal died for the sake of this. A beautiful delicate fish slathered with a green slime and thrown in the oven. 2. Lamb Chops: Heavy handed with garam masala which is overpowering . The dish needs some acid to balance it. It was also the only under seasoned dish of the day….They probably ran out of salt after cooking curries. Curries: 1. Butter Chicken: Only for those with a liking for overly sweet creamy curry with a heavy hand of burnt garlic. 2. Junglee Maas: The salt precludes you from tasting anything else. Naan: Yeast needs a bit of sugar to do It’s magic. The chef was just as heavy handed with sugar as he was with the salt. The nan was sweet and burnt from the bottom. Biryani: Undercooked rice. And no it was not al Dente. The flavors were a mish but mash. The chef lost his way to Lucknow and starter driving towards Hyderabad. It lacked the fragrance and the delicacy of a Lucknavi biryani. Forget the biryani, what kind of a half @ss chef gats Raita wrong. THE UGLY The middle aged balding waiter. And I am not talking about his looks . The description is simply so that people can identify this prince amongst men. He was rude, smug arrogant and dismissive of our concerns. We told him the Lamb was too salty. He could have acted concerned or contrite. Oh! No No No. This king of charm was operating on a different dimension. His response was “we make a100 lb a day, this is what it is”. He did not condescend to talk to us after that and at the end of the meal simple left the bill and the card machine at the table. IN SUMMARY The food leaves a lot to be desired and the service even more. Food: 1/5 | Service: 1/5 | Atmosphere: 2/5

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!

Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
