Anjin Costa Mesa Reviews from The Last Year
Love this place.
Always try making a reservation as the wait here can get quite long. Tsurhashi is just a tad bit cheaper but I have to give to Anjin for the quality. We came here actually with no reservation upon doors first opening but there was already a long list of reservations so we couldn't be seated at first until there was a no show so they seated us. We ordered prime boneless short rib, pork cheek, beef tongue, rib eye. Everything was delicious and no complaints on the food. Only thing I would say is don't let your server pour your beer! Our server didn't know how to pour beer and never tilted the cup so when she poured our beer, half of it was foam, which was disappointing.
I got chased out asking why my tip was $3 short of 20%.
I would come spend that same amount at least 2 times a week! And they acknowledged saying i know your a regular but regulars usually tip more. Being a business owner myself i would be speechless knowing my employees were rejecting business due to a tip they expect!.If they don't make enough maybe they should talk to the boss or find another career! My order came out to $272 with only 2 people . And just 2 of the plates were the highest priced meats on the list . If i didn't order those meats my bill would of been $110 . I Dnt think its fair they are basing it off the total and then basically harassing people based on a tip .
price: $$$ service: 4/5 - beef tongue (7/10) - beef
price: $$$ service: 4/5 - beef tongue (7/10) - beef carpaccio (8.5/10) - marbled prime boneless short rib (9/10) - prime boneless short rib (6/10) went here for a birthday and spent around $90 including tax and tip for 4 meats and a bowl of rice. overall very intimate and small. be prepared to wait 2-4hrs depending on the day and time, we were quoted around 1.5-2hrs but ended up getting called around 1hr due to canceled reservations. i enjoyed every meat beside the prime short rib which i thought was a bit tough. def good to try out!!
It took me so long to finally dine here since I've always
It took me so long to finally dine here since I've always heard about the long wait times. Finally made it here on a weekday 15 minutes before opening. Even though we were the first ones there, I didn't realize there was a sign up sheet as parties were getting seated before we did when they opened at 5pm. So lesson learned, make sure you sign in when you arrive. Once seated, they took orders and brought food out very quickly. The two of us ordered the #2 Ribeye ($17.95), #4 Marbled Prime Boneless Shortrib ($19.95), Pork Belly ($9.50), #30 Beef Carpaccio ($9.95), and #43 Seasoned Mix Vegetable and Ground Chicken on Rice in Hot Stone Pot with Soup ($12.00). To start off, the carpaccio is a must. It was so thinly-cut and easy to eat with the dressing on top that gave it some good flavor. The rice was delicious too where they split it into two portions for us before serving. Now onto the meats which were all delicious in their own ways. The ribeye was super buttery but the marinade in the shortrib made it so good that you didn't need any sauce --both great in its own ways, wish they could be combined. The pork belly wasn't anything special though, not bad nor good. I'd say stick to the beef options here. The food is delicious, but definitely on the pricey end. It's a nice spot for Japanese BBQ for a special occasion though. Definitely come early to avoid the wait times.
The line is always long, they will charge you higher price
The line is always long, they will charge you higher price if you pay credit cards and one of the manager the Japanese guy is giving us rude service no smile only ask for tips
My family dined at Anjin for my brother's birthday and we
My family dined at Anjin for my brother's birthday and we enjoyed it. The service was great as the staff came by frequently to check on us and ask if we needed anything else. Sitting inside the restaurant also was comfortable and pleasant. I wished the short rib soup had a little more flavor but it grew on me the more I ate it and it felt nice to eat on a cold day. We definitely enjoyed the #4, #8, wagyu, and Kobe meats, which were high quality. The homemade kimchi and kimchi cucumbers were also great. At the end, the staff came out with a complimentary dessert and sang happy birthday for my brother, which was fun. Would recommend!
The wait times are the only reason I'm -1 from this review.
It's a really small restaurant but it does not affect my opinion on the food. Every single dish that came out was absolutely delicious. The crispy rice bowl was crunchy and packed with veggies. The kimchi cold noodles were nicely cold and I loved the crunch cucumbers. The service here is alright. Nothing special. I don't remember what meats we got but the one that stood out to me the most was the beef tongue which was a nice chewy texture, especially dipped in the lemon juice. It's a bit pricey but they know the cost of their meats. I wouldn't come back on a busy weekend though
Was here for a friends bday last night during pretty heavy
Was here for a friends bday last night during pretty heavy downpour. A group came a bit earlier as we were told that the wait would be notoriously long, so we anticipated to stop by a local coffee shop to pass the time. To our surprise, within 5-10 mins from the restaurant we were told our seats were ready, and off to the races we went. Boasting A5 Wagyu and lots of other marbled/assorted meats, we started off our order with the beef carpaccio which was sliced incredibly thin and had a great hint of sweetness from the mayo. We proceeded to also order the sliced short rib, beef tongue, beef tartare, pork belly and some veggies which were great wrapped with all the meats and grilled. I especially enjoyed the two selections of dipping sauce, one being a light/sweet soy sauce and the other, a miso based garlic soy sauce that was my go-to of the night. Although I couldn't get a photo in time, the A5 was incredible that we ordered it multiple times.. totally worth it for a night like this! The night ended with a surprise happy birthday celebration for my friend's 30th and even the nice almond tofu and red bean vanilla ice cream desserts that we shared were pleasant and not terribly too sweet. Shout out to the wait staff who were the stars of the night. Not once did I have to ask for a refill of my hot tea since it was being filled up every time another meat plate was dropped off. This was 100% worth the hype and I look forward to bringing my wife next time!
Great service.
Small but cozy and the staff are great. Marbled short rib is my favorite
The price went up since last time I went.
Quality is still amazing and service is ok. Go before opening time to put your name down. Went for a bday and the total cost was 400
Came w my boyfriend right at opening (5pm) and the waitlist
Came w my boyfriend right at opening (5pm) and the waitlist was longgg (about 7 parties ahead of us) but the hostess was so nice, since the other parties were either not there or reserved, he let us sit down if we could be done within 1 1/2hrs. Heckkk yea we can :9 Love this place bc of the great quality meats!! A must order for me is the marinated raw beef with egg yolk :3 we got sake and beer and they poured it for us which we appreciate but they did spill a little so we told them well pour it ourselves when we ordered another beer. The price went up a bit but that's not a problem bc they work super hard. And a complimentary hot tea to end the meal is nice! They gave us a time frame but never made us feel rushed at all, and we did finish within an hour ;)
Quality prime beef - go for it.
This small Japanese BBQ restaurant is very popular, and the line can be long. The prime short rib is tender and flavorful. The beef tongue and pork cheek are OK. The sausage is good. Service is nice.
