Be the first to ReplySmall hidden gem in La Jolla
This is a hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant in La Jolla. It is not on the water and has no great views, although a nice outdoor patio, but the food and service are terrific. We had lunch and dinner several times during our one month visit to La Jolla and never had a bad experience. All of the fish is fresh and tasted great, especially the Japanese scallop which is often hard to find and tastes so sweet. Looking forward to return on our next visit.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent sushi and sashimi
Excellent sushi and sashimi with very unusual choices. The fish melted in our mouthes. There was no โfishyโ taste to it. Service was very attentive.
Be the first to ReplyHimitsu a great choice.
Himitsu came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. We sat outside with heaters and had very good service. Some really interesting specials, a few of which we tried and liked. Tostada app was great, we also had honeymoon oyster and lobster special miso soup. Several roles and several individual pieces rounded out our delicious night out

One of the absolutely best! We went for the omakase dinner โ brilliant presentation of sashimi and sushi; wonderful to watch the sushi chef at work throughout the meal. Amazingly fresh fish โ opulent and seductive; fragrant and unctuous. A splendid feast!

Truly amazing. When I travel, I usually donโt like to visit a restaurant twice. We went twice. Himitsu roll was the best piece of sushi I have ever had in my life.

I brought my sister for sushi at Himitsu and we sat on the covered porch. There were plants overhead which added to the ambiance. The reservations were honored exactly as I asked (seating and time). The staff is extremely polite and friendly. There is parking in the lot in front and also on the street. I'm sure it helped that my reservation was just after 8pm on a weekday. We started with some delicious shishito peppers, miso soup, edamame and a salmon tostada. If I'm at all critical, the miso soup was a bit bland for my sister, but I was grateful that there wasn't a lot of salt. The Honeymoon Oyster is a must-try. Only one oyster per order. The soft shell crab roll wasn't my favorite, but the Himitsu roll was fantastic. We ordered another. The green tea ice cream was very good, as well. Note that if you get a table outside, it is nice except the parking lot is right next to the tables with just a think barrier and there are cars on the other side, of course. I recommend reservations. The staff is some of the best I've ever dealt with. I wish I could remember names.
Be the first to ReplyGet the San Diego uni!!!
TL;DR - reasonably priced quality sushi. Get the San Diego uni.
Our group of 10 had a 7:30 reservation on a Friday night. It didn't look that busy but we still had to wait about 10 minutes or so. I also didn't realize they close at 9 until we were finishing up and they were cleaning up the rest of the restaurant. I guess I'm just used to NYC hours.
To start, we ordered a bottle of sake, and they bring out a tray of different colored sake cups for you to pick from, which I thought was pretty cool. Not a big deal, but it's just the little things!
Some people in the group don't eat raw fish, so it was nice that they had a lot of cooked food options. I am in the raw fish eating group and our group was looking forward to the 'secret omakase' for about $55, that we saw online. Unfortunately, they did not have this when we got there and our waiter, Jake, explained that there was only the sashimi omakase or we could get the pieces a la carte. So we decided to "build our own omakase". Six of us agreed on all the pieces we would order, and eat it in the same order so that we could share the same experience.
We had the seared o'toro, chu toro, blue fin tuna, amaebi (sweet shrimp), hamachi, salmon, salmon belly, scallop, wagyu with uni, and uni. I love tuna, so all of the tuna pieces were great to me - especially the seared o'toro. Amaebi was only okay to me but they fry up the shrimp heads for you, which I really liked and it's not something I'd seen other Japanese restaurants do for me before. Wagyu with uni was really good too but it's so rich, I don't think I could eat more than one of these. My favorite was definitely the uni. The San Diego uni was AMAZING. If available, they'll give you a choice of San Diego or Hokkaido. I didn't try the Hokkaido but I have in NYC, so I know it's something I can get back at home. But when you're in San Diego, you get the San Diego uni, and it did not disappoint! The pieces are also pretty reasonably priced. Wagyu and uni will obviously be more expensive ($13) but for regular pieces like blue fin, salmon, or even the scallop, these were only $3-$4! You can't even get half the quality for this exact price at a fushi restaurant in NYC!
My sister ordered the Himitsu Roll (spicy salmon and crab, topped with scallop, jalapeno, cilantro aioli) and I tried a piece. In theory, it sounds really good. I like everything that's in there, separately. But together, there was just a bit too much going on. I also ate some of the Soft Shell Crab Roll (deep Fried Soft Shell Crab, lettuce, yamagobo , salsa, kaiware) from the non-sushi eaters' side, and it was kind of disappointing. The crab was skimpy and the roll tasted mostly like lettuce. I think they just don't do special rolls well here. It sounds good on paper but the execution falls flat.
Minor gripe - they use paper menus, which seemed like they could have been disposable and most of our menus were pretty dirty. If you're going to use paper menus, I think you can issue a new round between customers, especially during Covid times.
I normally don't say this for a city I'm just visiting, since I like to try new restaurants each time I go - but if I ever find myself in SD again, I would definitely come back!
Fresh fish!
Fresh fish! We got the chirashi and the toksen chirashi bowls and were very pleased. The fish melted in our mouth.
The rice was nicely seasoned and not sweet.
We plan to return.
Finally had the chance to go!
Iโve been wanting to come to Himitsu for almost a year ago, but for some reason I couldnโt until now. Seriously the sushi is the closest thing to be eating in Japan. The food is amazing and the chefs are all super nice. I will definitely be going again soon. Everything was worth trying!!
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite sushi place in
My favorite sushi place in La Jolla so far. I love coming over here after working late, sit at the bar and watch the chefs do their thing (Derrick and/or Mitsu, hope I spelled this right). Itโs relaxing and I havenโt tried anything I didnโt like yet, including the Omakase.

This is the first restaurant I ever got kicked out because I wanted to stay longer than an hour and 45 minutes talking to my wife... great food and great service... the end was just a big disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent quality ingredients- limited menu
Excellent quality ingredients- top notch uni and otoro are a must mention. The sake menu was leas stellar and the menu is quite limited overall - but if you are looking for quality you have come to the right place. The outdoor seating area is lovely and not loud- service was adequate although would not say amazing. This gets a good vote based on the excellent ingredients.... great to go for sashimi.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent sushi!
We came here for a friend's birthday on a Friday night. Only 4 of us. Good thing we reserved b/c this place is quaint with patio seating. Friendly service and excellent sushi. Fresh, flavorful and good size sashimi. Everything we ordered were delicious, except the cucumber roll was the last to arrive at the table. We had a great birthday dinner and we would come back.
