Fabulous Seafood & Wonderful Service too!
We tried Ocean for dinner for our one night in Birmingham. What a delightful experience. Their seafood selections are delectable and their services first rate. We sampled their raw oysters and fig salad to start then my wife ordered the pompano and I ordered the flounder. Both were nicely prepared and tasted delicious. We also shared a tasty bottle of Sicilian white wine which was a perfect accompaniment to the seafood. We will definitely return on our next visit.

I went here for my aunts graduation celebration, and let me tell you, it was wonderful! The food was magical, the service was impeccable, and when I walked in, it felt like Mamma Mia! I ordered the filet mignon and it was wonderful! It came with a potato and green beans. For dessert I had the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. We sat outside and it was nice weather so we had a good experience. 10/10, would recommend.
We were visiting Birmingham and this was recommended to us
We were visiting Birmingham and this was recommended to us by the lovely owner of the amazing Hassinger Daniels Mansion nearby. Had a quick cocktail at Dave's Pub on the opposite corner (not fancy but a damn good bar!) and then went for dinner. Food was outstanding; service very professional. But sometimes you happen to order about 5 minutes after a tour bus of 25 Road Scholars (not misspelled!) had just ordered. Our 1st glass of wine was finished after 35 minutes and still no appetizers. That said, the Oysters Bienville were exquisite, and the special lobster tail dish, even at $39, was a treat: two large tails split so you get four (they gave us a fifth to make up for the wait) over a bed of fresh spring vegetables and mashed potatoes....way good. My wife was also very pleased with her crab cakes and entree. Go before they get busy and you will be totally happy. And we are from NYC so we can be fussy but OCEAN rocked in the end.
Derrick our server was phenomenal.
I had the whole fried flounder it was cooked to perfection. The Brussels sprouts were ok. I always have great meals here. We definitely took advantage of bringing our wine and paying the corkage fee.
The worst!! I had a great experience at Ocean in July
The worst!! I had a great experience at Ocean in July 2023, so going there for Valentine's Day seemed to be a no brainer. It could not have been worse -- food was tasteless, we were seated in the outdoor courtyard area on cold, uncomfortable metal chairs, no ambiance -- the server was great, but nothing else was close to.expectations.

Our group had a great experience at Ocean about a year and a half ago but we didn't get so lucky this time. I can't recommend it, especially for the price point. I ordered scallops which were $35 and got three, drenched in hot sauce which I don't care for. Others in our group of 8 were also disappointed with their entrees. Generally the sushi got good reviews and everything else was lackluster. Our server showed no warmth whatsoever and did nothing to make the meal a pleasant experience. Suffice it to say we'll be taking this one off our list.
My table got a dozen raw oysters.
Our waitress was helpful in helping us decide which to get. This is a wonderful spot for a date night or celebration. The dining area is small so there's not a lot of noise. There is valet available as well.

Everything is always great Love Robbie! service , food, ambiance...one of my favorites in Birmingham! ,
Ok so my take on Ocean.
It is a very nice atmosphere! The vibe is white table cloth and I really enjoyed the service. Now on to my favorite discussions which is the food. I'd go back here to sit at the bar, have drinks and oysters. I did that as a prelude to my dinner and it was better than dinner itself. I had the whole fried snapper which was just ok. It had no flavor so I asked for some chimmichurri on the side to punch it up a notch. It helped. The Brussels were ok. I must say the dessert was delicious! So for me going back means a nice seat at the bar with a cocktail and some oysters.

Have a heavy snack before you go! (unless you're ordering sushi) I went in 1/2024 with a party of 8 on a Wednesday. Heads up - 20% gratuity is automatically added on for a party this size. I ordered sushi and enjoyed it. I ordered the crab cakes, which came with 2. They were the size of scallops. The smallest I've ever seen but delicious. But tiny. Speaking of scallops... One of the ladies in the party came in pretty hungry. She ordered the scallops ($35 - no sides just garnish). It came with three (3) average size scallops. I felt so bad for her... She looked devastated. Another friend said the ceviche was not seasoned well. Another said her fish was not seasoned well. The swordfish was reportedly very good, as was the chocolate Panna cotta. The gumbo was reportedly under seasoned. The pear salad and risotto didn't get rave reviews either. The portions are smaller compared to other fine dining restaurants in B'ham. I'd recommend the sushi (which is actually fairly priced for this dining experience). During my first visit, a few years ago, I got a whole fish with the head - I can't recall what kind of the fish was. Anyhow, it had so many bones in it that I could not enjoy the fish so I knew this time I would try something else.. That's how I ended up with sushi.
Number 1 recommended dish needs revision
Went for our 6 year anniversary’s, husband had the steak, I had the scallops. The scallops… the scallops!!! They need to move to the number one recommended dish. Tender, flavorful, the paring as well was really well put together. The steak was ok, still flavorful but all the sea food dishes we had, chefs kiss.
Not worth the money.
My husband got fish. The portion size was for an infant. The money that was dropped that night was not worth it. Won’t be back. Btw. Waiter was great.
Gone gone
We have been going to Ocean for about 12-15 years but tonight ended that ! The wait staff were dressed in jeans and tennis shoes vs the black or black and white attire they used to wear. For what you pay for a meal there, you want them to at least be dressed professionally. The menu was less than enticing tbh! I ended up not eating any of my meal. I ended up (not by choice) with raw fish and rice. $42. No. Also, our reservation was at 6pm and were seated promptly, but got our main course at 7:20 pm, with no explanation or apologies from anyone. Needless to say, that was our last trip to Ocean. So sad that our favorite restaurant is now off the table , literally.
Not worth the trip
We picked this spot for out sisters 70th birthday. There were 4 of us in our party. We were seated by the windows which had s shower curtain with Jellyfish on them separating the tables along the windows. This was not a good first impression for our first time here. We thought the curtain was tacky for a restaurant that had such good reviews and a more upscale one at that. Our server was very kind and nice. We ordered the following dishes my sister Michele from Florida ordered the snapper which she said was one of the best she has ever had. My sister Robin from Chicago/Florida and Birthday girl Dawn from Jasper ordered the scallops. I ordered the salmon in case my sister Birthday girl didn't like her scallops because I like both. We received our food and my sister couldn't even swallow her taste of the scallop so we switched. The scallops were just ok. My other sister didn't like hers either. The salmon was just ok. My Birthday sister did get a nice dessert for the end of our night, Our bill was over 300.00 so sorry to say not the best for us or the birthday girl. Hope you have a better experience than us if you go.
