We were staying at an Air BnB near by and had cravings for Thai food after a long day in the pool. It’s my first time having Thai food in this desert region, but figured that its hard to go wrong with Thai food.
The chicken satay were fine, but the Som Tom (papaya salad) lacked flavor. After a couple of bites, it was clear that the the dish really lacked fish sauce. I’m not sure if they went light on (or skipped) this main ingredient because of the clientele in this area, but a papaya salad isn’t really a papaya salad with out fish sauce.
We ordered a few entrees: Pad See Ew, Pad Kee-Moew, and Pad Ma-Kua Mong. These are the usual dishes I order whenever I’m having Thai no matter if I’m in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco or in Bangkok.
The noodles in both noodle dishes were a bit old, as they lacked the softness of fresh rice noodles. And like the papaya salad, the noodle dishes also lacked fish sauce and veered on the bland side. The Pad Ma-Kua Mong was okay, but lacking in flavor as well. This was a universal agreement amongst our group that shared all these dishes.
I was torn about leaving this review as I wasn’t sure if the lack of flavor (primarily fish sauce) was an issue with the cooks or due to the restaurant having to alter the traditional recipes to cater to the clientele of the desert region around them. I sat on this for a couple of weeks and decided to post my review as it is an honest review and perhaps the restaurant can see that there are other customers that know what these Thai dishes should taste like and expect them to be cooked the traditional way.
