The Trails Eatery La Mesa Reviews from The Last Year

Found this place quite a few years ago while looking for Gluten Free Breakfast, which was pretty hard to find back in the day. They offered Gluten Free Pancakes, which, at the time, were only a dream. (Being Celiac in those days was a huge problem when eating out) We enjoyed the atmosphere and Stacy, the owner was always pleasant and sparkly, at the same time. During the COVID pandemic, we moved 30 miles into the mountains and coming to The Trails became a memory. Today, on a trip to a doctors appointment, we decided that we needed to see if it was still as good as we remembered. OH MY! Not disappointed, for sure‼. So happy to say that the quality is amazing, still, the atmospheric even better, and the G/F menu takes up a full page now....including a G/F biscuit, along with more breakfast and lunch choices! Stacy even stopped at our table for a lively chat..... WE WILL BE BACK......SOON!

I discovered this gem a few years ago and whenever I have a breakfast or lunch meet up, this is my go to suggestion. My goal is to branch out on the menu each time but I always order my favorite hash-it's just SO GOOD. But I don't think anything on the menu could disappoint. Service is always very friendly which is refreshing these days.
We have been to this cute place several times.
I think it is family-owned and it sure feels very "down home!" The banana pancakes are to die for!!!

Great local restaurant, we enjoy coming here for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Food is excellent and staff very friendly.
Quality has really gone down.
No wonder it isn't as crowded. The mushroom veggie omelette was watery and just sad. So sorry it has changed so much.
Trails eatery might not be aesthetic and a hole in the wall
Trails eatery might not be aesthetic and a hole in the wall lowkey but the food is top top tier for brunch food! I've gone to cute and popular brunch spots in La Jolla and tbh I regret it most of the time bc it's expensive asf and the food here is sooooo much better. My go to order is the crab cake Benedict, French onion soup with extra croutons, and 1 cinnamon roll pancake on the side for last. All for me! I literally stuff my face whenever I'm here, it hits every. time.
I always enjoy taking friends to the Trails.
That way we can split the cinnamon roll pancakes. They are sooo delicious but far too decadent for one person. I would highly recommend this place for all your breakfast and brunch needs. You won't be disappointed!
The quality of the food was great.
It's not a traditional sit down restaurant, instead you pay at the counter and go find an available table. Everyone was super friendly. The food came out so quick I was shocked. It's always busy on the weekends, so you gotta wait in line or fight for a spot. Overall good choice. The drinks are too sweet, so if you're not a fan of sugar I would ask for less sweetness.
The food is all homemade and is delicious.
The friendly staff makes to always feel welcome. This restaurant is in our neighborhood and we have been dining here since it opened.

I writing here while I'm sitting at this place,Man this place has gone downhill. Waitresses don't even stop by to see if you want another refill. They only serve your food and walk away. They changed it completely, the food was terrible. How could you charge so much for the lousy service and food. Order a meat omelette was supposed to come with avocado. You should be ashamed of yourself about the toast when you usually get two slices of toast you got one slice cut in half. What kind of bullshit is that? And the prices unbelievable. Only a bunch of fools will go back to that place.
This place is bland city.
I wanted to like it so much that I even went back a second time, thinking the first time was a fluke since people talk it up so much. Nope, it was for the second time, just bland and boring. The food is good quality and the cinnamon roll pancake is delicious though.

Absolutely a gem of a spot!!! I came here because it's celiac-friendly and ordered the GF healthy hash, benne asada, sin-a-mon roll pancakes, and the lemon berry frenchie. This is my second time ordering, and the food was consistently amazing whether on the go or dining in. What was even better was the attentive service that Emily and Mikala gave us each time we visited. They made us feel welcomed and well taken care of. I honestly can't recommend this place enough! 10/10 will be back every time I'm in town!

We LOVE The Trails! The best breakfast we've had in SD or anywhere! It's absolutely delicious EVERY SINGLE TIME! I've tried so many things on the menu for breakfast and lunch and every single item I've tried has been absolutely amazing! The cinnamon roll pancakes are heavenly, the pesto scramble is one of my top faves, I also love the salads, sandwiches, and drinks too! My husband also loves his go to items! The Trails hits a home run for me every time. The service is quick, amazing, and so friendly. Everyone that works there is always so kind to us and we love coming in! The ambiance makes us feel so welcome and we always highly recommend The Trails to family and friends! A+++ Our fave!!!!

Great food, great service! Everyone is very friendly who work there and so far we haven't had a meal there that we didn't like. I'm partial to their gluten-free vegetarian burger i.e. the hippie burger and French toast is pretty darn amazing. I'd like that. They have a pretty extensive completely gluten-free menu as well. My husband is also always pleased with his food.

Firstly, I want to say that I am extremely happy that Trails did not get shut down by the pandemic. My family and I have been coming here for a very long time. Love their food. But I am not a fan of the "order at front desk and find a seat" procedure. I miss having a real waitress and/or waiters. The staff are great but I guess I am old fashioned - I like the interaction and service.
Ambiance was nice but a very simple, regular breakfast
Ambiance was nice but a very simple, regular breakfast place it was decent filling. You can find this quality of food everywhere. Not something that stuck out

came here after hiking cowles mountain, i ordered a mimosa flight and breakfast burrito - everything was so delicious! everyone was super friendly and the food came out so quickly but really fresh and piping hot. love coming here after a hike
Been coming here for 10 years.
Remember when it was a hidden gem. Here are the facts (in my opinion): Very good home cooking family eatery. Fresh, great ranch by the way. Great for breakfast, unfortunately since there is a brunch emphasis (alcohol is available) you get everyone off Cowles mountain and it gets loud in there on a Saturday and Sunday... The wonderful owner is always there at the register and is very friendly. It would still have a local feel but since it's by the mountain there are a ton of "hikers". Nevertheless, the food is made to order by ordering at counter and is always tasty. Expect a long line and wait to order food but it's worth it. Calling in for food is pretty efficient and they text you when your food is available. For choices the burger and BLT are great as well as pesto chicken sandwich. Fun fact: Something weird I have encountered here is EVERY time Is when they give me a straw it's always broken (haha). Pro tip: even if the open sign is on they close at 2pm.
MY SUGGESTION… YOU NEED TO EAT HERE!! Amazing Food Quality
My local friends suggested we eat here during SD Pride weekend (Sun. July 16th) and I’m glad we did!! I had the most amazing “Piggy Back Bene” ever!! The pork, egg and covered in a delicious Chipotle Hollandaise that I literally was licking the sauce off the plate with my fingers. Now, I know why he line was stretched out the door!! It took us 30 mins to get a table, always remember if there is a line to enter a restaurant, there’s a good reason why! I want to thank Nick and Michael for inviting us here and paying for our breakfast! FIVE CLAWS UP!!!!! A Must Go. Thanks for reading my review of The Trails Eatery in San Diego. Joe G. Bear
